Copperplate Calligraphy - 2 DAY WORKSHOP

Workshop details
Date: Saturday, September 29 - Sunday, September 30, 2018
10:00am - 5:00pm
In this workshop, Salman Khattak from Toronto Pen Co. will be introducing his system for learning Copperplate Calligraphy in this 2-day workshop. Fundamental forms for both the minuscule (small) and majusucles (capital) letters will be covered.

This class is open for both beginners and those with experience in Copperplate or other pointed pen scripts. Those new to this style of writing will leave with a good idea of the structure of the letters and start off with a solid foundation. More experienced participants will be able to refine their work and work on any challenges they are facing.

Class size is kept small so that time can be spent to go through the entire process with each participant. This allows me to help with the challenges unique to each and explain things in more detail.

Class will start with studying the minuscule letters in groups that share similar strokes and structure. Then the class will practice the strokes that make up the letters followed by writing words and learning about joining letters and spacing words.

The study of Majuscules will start with learning the structure of the stem stroke that is the basis for most of the letters followed by some practice and, if time permits, learning of some variations.

You will need the following supplies for this workshop:
  • Holder: An oblique holder is recommended for both right and left handed participants. You can also use a straight holder if you are comfortable with it.
  • Nibs: I recommend the Hunt 101 or Hunt 22 from Speedball. (Please make sure your nibs are prepared to take ink – new nibs need to be washed with detergent/toothpaste to make them ready for use).
  • Ink: Walnut ink, Higgins Eternal, Parker Quink Blue-Black, Pelikan Brilliant Black are all good options.
  • Paper: Rhodia blank pads or HP Premium Choice Laser 32 lb. You will need about 15 sheets.
If you require a complete kit, please add it to your order.

Printed copies of the instructions as well as the guidelines will be provided. Additional resources will be emailed to the participants after the class to continue practicing.

There is a maximum of 10 students for this class so early registration is recommended to avoid disappointment.
